Día de Muertos Altar display

Día de Muertos is a Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1st and 2nd to honor loved ones who have died. The holiday involves creating ofrendas or home altars through which we can celebrate loved ones whose graves or resting places we may not be able to visit.

Ofrendas are often made up of photographs of loved ones, calaveras (sugar skulls), cempazúchitl (marigold flowers), pan de muerto (sweet bread), and food or other items which the loved one enjoyed.

In order to put together our Escuelita ofrenda, we ask that parents bring photographs of any loved ones who you wish to honor. The picture should be labeled with a sticky note or paper indicating who the person is.

Additionally, we ask that families bring in any empty cardboard boxes that you may have lying around which will be used to build the altar. Finally, if anyone is willing to donate pan de muerto or calaveras, those would also be much appreciated. Thank you!

Fall Carnival 🎃

Escuelita will host its annual Fall/Halloween Carnival in our playground of the main building on Friday, October 31st from 3:15-5:15pm.

Each class will host a booth to manage at which the children will take turns playing for “prizes”. The carnival is free and open to all Escuelita families, relatives, and friends.

Any adults who wish to come participate are welcome to grab their kiddo and make their way through the carnival booths with them. Any children whose family members aren’t able to attend will participate in the booths with their regular teachers. A reminder that parking in our lot is limited, so any families parking in the surrounding area must observe and respect all neighborhood parking requirements.

We also request your help donating healthy and safe treats to hand out as prizes to each child for “playing” at the booths, as mentioned above. Also mentioned above, we request families help in working the booths in shifts throughout the duration of the carnival. Communication about this will come from your Room Parent.

We highly encourage that your child dress in Halloween costume during the carnival. You can bring the costume in the morning of Oct. 31st, and the teachers will help your child to get dressed in it after nap-time. If you are able to get here early to help your child get into costume, it would be a big help!

The children will also make their own container in which to store the prizes that they collect. Classes will attend the carnival during these time slots:

3:15-4:15 pm
Gold, Silver, White, Green, Red, Yellow, Purple & Turquoise Rooms

4:15-5:15 pm
Pink, Orange, Blue, Copper & Rainbow Rooms

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip: Copper Room

Escuelita students are going to the Pumpkin Patch! We will be taking the six oldest classrooms of students – Copper, Blue, Orange, Pink, Turquoise, Purple – to the fundraiser pumpkin patch at Christ Lutheran Church (300 E. Monroe St, 78704). Your respective class should be receiving an email with specifics for their trip, but for good measure, we wanted to re-send the basic info here:

Students will be transported in our school bus with 5-point restraint booster seats for younger children. Parents are welcome to either meet us there, or follow the bus to the Church.

The visit is expected to last around an hour, including picking out pumpkins, talking about the shapes and sizes, and singing songs. Please ensure that you sign the permission slip attached to your child’s sign-in clipboard as we are required to have written permission before transporting them on the bus!
